ABOUT RENE HERBST (1891 - 1982)
Born in Paris, Herbst studied architecture in London and Frankfurt. In 1927, he designed the revolutionary "Chaise Sandows". In 1930, he co-founded the Union des Artistes Modernes (UAM) alongside Robert Mallet-Stevens and Francis Jourdain, as a countermovement to Art Déco, committing entirely to functional Modernism. In 1945, he was elected chairman of the UAM, leading the famous "Les Formes Utiles" exhibitions.
